
David Thompson, nicknamed "Skywalker", had a 9-year career playing in the NBA and ABA with the Denver Nuggets and the Seattle Supersonics. The nickname "Skywalker" came from his incredible leaping ability that was at one time a Guinness World Record of 44 inches. Thompson is an important part in the history of basketball who was known for his high flying slam dunks. He created the 360 slam dunk, he created the alley-oop, and he has scored the third most amount of points in a game in history.

Bio:
David O'Neil Thompson was born on July13,1954 in Shelby, North Carolina. He attended Crest Senior High School and played for the varsity team all four years there. Thompson went to North Carolina State University where he began to make history.

Thompson is the greatest NC State player of all time due to his many contributions to the team. Thompson has once led the team to an undefeated season and has led them to a championship in 1974 against UCLA. Thompson's jersey number is currently the only number retired at NC State in men's basketball.


Thompson was selected as the 1st pick in the 1st round of both the NBA Draft and the ABA Draft in 1975 but would go on to sign with the Denver Nuggets. In 1976, Thompson would compete in the first-ever Slam Dunk Contest where he would lose against Julius Erving. Thompson has also led the Nuggets to a championship series vs Julius Erving and the New York Nets but would lose.

Thompson would be traded to the Seattle Supersonics in 1982 and would retire in 1984.
