
George "Iceman" Gervin played for two basketball leagues, the American Basketball Association(ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Gervin played in the ABA from 1972-1976 with the Virginia Squires and the San Antonio Spurs, and during the 1976 NBA Merger, Gervin switched leagues and played in the NBA from 1976-1986 with the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls. Gervin is one of the best players of all time known for his elite scoring ability. Nicknamed "Iceman" due to his unique style of smooth style of play and laid back attitude that was deemed cool as ice.
George Gervin was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, born on April 27, 1952. Gervin attended Martin Luther King Jr High School then attended Eastern Michigan University where he played for 2 years.

Although Gervin was drafted as the 40th pick in the third round of the 1974 NBA Draft, he went undrafted and signed by the Virginia Squires to begin his professional career. While playing with the Squires, Gervin played alongside basketball legend Julius "Dr.J" Erving.

In 1974, Gervin was sent to the San Antonio Spurs for $228,000.


Gervin turned the Spurs into instant playoff contenders with his scoring ability. Playing with role-playing point guard James Silas and eventually big-man Artis Gilmore, the Spurs became a successful franchise nearly making the NBA Finals in 1979.



In 1985, Gervin was traded to the Chicago Bulls and played with a young Michael Jordan.

After the NBA, Gervin played the rest of his basketball career in Europe.
